Frequently Asked Questions

 

Virginia E-Notch system:

Fort Walker requires all hunters to use the Virginia DWR GoOutdoorsVA app or (866) GOT-GAME (468-4263) to check their deer, turkey, or bear in with the state. You must still bring your deer, turkey, or bear to game check.  When prompted for county, select Caroline. When prompted for land type, select federal.

Youth iSportsman accounts:

Youth that hunt at Fort Walker must have an iSportsman account. Once the account is created, please contact the Visitor Control Center at (804) 633-8585 to have the account approved.

 

Is hunting allowed on Sundays?

No, there is no hunting permitted on Sundays on Fort Walker.

 

Where is the Game Check Station located?

The Game Check Station is located in the parking lot of the Fish and Wildlife Office at the intersection of Rendezvous Drive and Walker Drive. Hunters will only need to come to the Game Check Station when checking in a deer, bear, turkey, bobcat, or coyote.

 

I drive or ride in multiple vehicles. How do I add vehicles to my profile?

Log into iSportsman, click on 'My Account' tab on the blue bar on the top right side of page. Click Account Details. Click Manage Account, scroll down to Vehicles. Click Add New.

 

Am I required to have a smartphone to hunt Fort Walker now?

No, you can call the iSportsman line to check in/out and reserve. (844) 326-3113

 

How do I electronically sign the background check and weapons registration form?

In order to sign the background check and/or weapons registration form you must be on a computer. If you do not have the ability to electronically sign, then you can print, sign in ink and scan the forms to the VCC. If you do not have the ability to scan your forms, then you can drop them off at VCC in person.

 

Do anglers have to use iSportsman to fish on Fort Walker?

Yes. After September 2, 2014 all anglers will be required to register in the iSportsman system, use the system to check in to fish for each pond/area, and then check out of the pond/area when finished fishing. The system will also record all fish caught and those kept to allow biologists to better manage Fort Walker waters.

 

I filled out the background check/weapons registration form and emailed it to the VCC. Now what?

Once the VCC has completed your background check and emailed you, you will then need to go to the VCC office to pick up your weapons registration form. The VCC will activate your Fort Walker iSportsman account and give you a recreational ID card.

 

Terminology of Check In and Check Out.

In the Fort Walker iSportsman system, you Check IN to an area to occupy it; and then Check OUT from the area when done.

 

Tracking a deer after Check Out time:

If you need to track a deer past check out time, call the Wildlife staff at (804) 633-8984 or (540) 938-1231 and notify them. Wildlife staff on duty will direct you on how to proceed.

 

Late game check:

If the Wildlife staff instructs you to conduct a late check, you are still required to come to game check AND check your deer in with the state. There is a green box with late night check cards at Game Check Station (in the parking lot of the Fish and Wildlife Office). Please fill out the required information and drop the biologist copy in the green box. Once you have completed checking your deer, call the police desk at (804) 633-8888 and notify them you are clear of the installation.
